Precious Memories [4]

uI'd blacked out. The darkness before me was deepening, pulling me in deeper with every breath. It was like a separate world from the one I knew, a darker and more evil world. But it was the only place I had. I listened for the sounds of the ambulance, or maybe those of a hospital. But I heard nothing but the steady thumping of my heart and the sound of my breath entering and exiting my lungs.

It was as though I was living in a new world. I could move and walk around in the dark. But in the real world, I lay motionless somewhere. If I could see in the dark, I'm sure I would see my fears, my dreams, and all the hope I'd lost when Caylee came.

I heard the thumping get faster, accompanied by a shrill beeping sound. Was that my heart? I looked around. The dark continued to envelop me, pulling me in and sucking me down. I heard a voice. Not just a voice, but Leah's voice. "Daniel! Daniel, don't you dare die on me!"

A light appeared in front of me. It radiated a comforting warmth. It beckoned me forward, yet I knew that to live, I'd have to turn back. I ran away, deeper and deeper into the black abyss. Closer to Leah's voice. The beeping slowed, as did the thumping. I no longer felt like I was about to die.

I felt a hand on mine. It was still dark, and nobody could be seen for miles. The fingers of the hand intertwined with mine, holding my hand and squeezing it. "Danny?"

I'd heard Leah's voice again. She sounded less worried. Less scared. Less urgent. She wanted me to wake up. I fought with all my might to open my eyes. But my struggle was to no avail. I remained in the dark. Leah squeezed my hand again. "Daniel, please."

I fought extra hard. Finally, I'd opened my eyes enough to barely see. I saw the ceiling above me, but my vision was blurred. I saw Leah and her black hair. Her green eyes were bright with excitement. "Danny!"

I smiled weakly. I used all my strength, outstretching my hand toward Leah. She smiled. My vision was slowly coming back. Everything was slightly less blurred. Leah grabbed my hand. "Danny! I can't believe it!"

"H-how l-l-long was-s I a-asleep?" I managed to stutter.

"Asleep? Danny, you were in a coma." Leah said, rubbing my hand with her thumb.

"I-i was?"

"Mmhm. You've been out cold for the past two weeks. The doctors didn't know if you'd make it." Leah explained.

"Oh m-my G-g-god." I stuttered.

"Mmhm."

I stared at Leah for a while. Finally, the pain in my stomach caught up with me. I was near tears when the doctor came in with a syringe. He emptied it into my IV, smiled, then left the room. With the medicine now in my system, the pain numbed to a dull pain. Leah sat by my side, waiting for me to feel good enough to talk to her.

Finally, I felt sleep tugging on my eyelids. I felt like I would be swallowed by the darkness if I fell asleep, though. I fought to stay awake. But finally, I was pulled in to the enticing warmth of the dreams inside my mind, and the constant thumping returned as the main sound in my mind, almost like a drumbeat.
